"I HATE BEING GAY"

I agree with Lisa that being gay is not a choice. Many people assume that sexual orientation is a choice, and that homosexuals choose their lifestyle. However, people fail to consider why someone might “choose” to put themselves through the pain, humility, and discrimination that many homosexuals endure. Sexual orientation is definitely not a choice. In fact, many homosexuals hate themselves for their sexual orientation, and struggle with all the stereotypes and difficulties that come with it.

The following video is a clip from the Tyra Banks show when Tyra interviews 3 different gay men who ironically hate gay people. It is a “self hatred” emotion that they feel toward their orientation. They each feel that gays are “disgustingly weak, terrifying, and that homosexuality is a shameful disorder.” One might question how that is possible? Or if they hate that lifestyle, why don’t they change it? But that is the point I am trying to make, these men have no choice, They were born this way, they didn’t choose to be gay, it is a feeling inside them that they have to accept, there is no switch in their body that they can turn on or off to be straight, as many people think there is.

Being gay is not an easy lifestyle, it is a struggle that homosexuals face every single day. One man on the Tyra show even has a goal for a deadline to “stop being gay”. He is hoping that it is just a phase because he despises himself and the stereotypes that come with his sexual orientation. Not to mention that he wants to eventually settle down, marry a woman and start a family. The other man is terrified of his orientation, and the thought that he has disappointed his family, he discusses the struggles of “coming out of the closet” and facing the public with who he is. People look down among homosexuals for who they are; they place a label on them as if as a “threat” to society, as if they are some kind of criminal. Homosexuals are not a threat to society; they are innocent people just trying to live their life like everyone else. Instead of being so concerned with homosexuals lifestyles, society should be more concerned about the real threats- the terrorists, rapists, pedophiles; people who actually deserve to be discriminated against and leave homosexuals alone.

Homosexuals should not be afraid to live their lives because they do not fit the “normal”. Homosexuals should be accepted in society as equal human beings rather than looked at as “weird” or “sinful”. As research proves, they didn’t “choose” to be different, and they should be credited for facing the struggles that society inflicts upon them just for being different.

  1. I really enjoyed reading your blog. It is depressing to think that these gay men are ashamed of who they are because society dsicriminates their lifestyle. I liked it when you said that they are not the criminals and should not be discriminated against like terrorist. That was a really good comparison and puts everything in perspective because homosexuals are not the enemy, they are just people. Unfortunately, not everyone can see that. Great job on the blog!

  2. This video makes me sad, but I also understand how they feel because I have a lot of gay friends who deal with this issue. Our community is so hard on anyone who they consider "different" especially homosexual people that they themselves can not even identify their true feelings to the public. To me it is not fair that our society makes people feel so torn inside when these are their feelings they cannot help. Homosexuals are american individuals just like everyone else and should be given the same rights and should be allowed to live happy and freely like we all do today.

  3. Thank you all for your support! The Tyra Banks video also made me sad that these men feel so ashamed of who they are when they can't help it! Hopefully they learn to love themselves for who they are despite the pressures of society that is forced on them.
